Verbetering efficiency geothermie productie

The operation of geothermal systems is often encountered with several challenges requiring complex decisions to be made as quick as possible. Late and passive decisions can lead to downtime, loss of performance and can endanger the security of heat supply. Digitalization of geothermal assets can facilitate automation, real-time model-based monitoring and decision support tools to eventually reduce costs and emissions of geothermal systems throughout their lifecycle, while improving operational safety and quality. It is expected that this can lead to a 30% reduction in operational expenditure (OPEX) and a 10% reduction in emissions. In Result 3 the aim is to demonstrate the added value of digital twin technology, including automated data retrieval, automatic and real-time interpretation (monitoring), and optimization of geothermal installations.

While such a system has value in multiple phases (design, installation, operation), the main focus in this project is on the production phase. During this phase, more efficient use of available data can be achieved by automatically retrieving it, interpreting it in real-time (monitoring), identifying deviations at an early stage, and making decisions based on the most up-to-date information. Several models will be integrated with real-time data and the workflow will be implemented and demonstrated in a geothermal site in the Netherlands. This can lead to significant benefits in areas such as maintenance planning or interventions. At the end of the project, an open access application will be disseminated and available to the sector for the interpretation of production data and operational optimization to improve the geothermal production process.

The activities of Result 3 will be:

  • Pilot framework for data management system and visualization
  • Integration of models, modules and applications fit for digital twin purpose
  • Pilot demonstration of developed modules
  • Open-access toolbox for the geothermal sector
